Spring officially begins this year on March 20, 2026. While the time old tradition of spring cleaning can begin any time before or after that date what I hear from most of you is, "what's on the professional spring-cleaning checklist?"
That's an easy answer for me, everything from inside to outside including the garage and my car! But I like to clean more than most people, so I'm going to assume that you're really asking for the easiest, time-saving tips to spring cleaning.
A Little Scientific Advice
I always say my number one rule for cleaning is start at the top and work your way down. Remember the great mathematician and scientist Sir Issac Newton? He's the one who said gravity pulls particles from the earth causing them to settle on surfaces below (I'm paraphrasing). But think about Newton's laws when you clean. Loosened dirt and dust falls down from your ceiling fan as you vacuum the top surface of the blades. Scrubbed surfaces ooze down from upper cabinets and electric range hoods. Start at the top and you'll save yourself the time of coming back to reclean what follows gravity.
Before you start to clean, look up! What haven't you cleaned in a while that is going to be dusty, dirty, grimy like those ceiling fan blades. By the way, a little aside here, if it's been a while, you'll probably notice that the dust on ceiling fan blades, the tops of refrigerators and cabinets is greasy feeling. That's because oils aerosolize and cling to the dust that's up there (Newton again). You may have to do more than vacuum or dust. You'll probably need to use a cleaning solution or degreaser on the areas above.
So number one: start at the top and you'll save yourself the time of coming back to reclean what follows gravity.
Map Out Your Strategy
Before you even begin cleaning, you should make a list of what you intend to clean. Make an actual pen and paper list so that you can check items off as you go. Every check mark is like a little reward for doing a good job, and it will keep you on task. Heck, I'd even share those chores with the family so they can be rewarded and feel better too!
An 85-year old ongoing multigenerational study from Harvard University found that among "high achievers" there is a strong connection between their professional success and being made to do household chores starting from the age of 4 or 5.
I'll share a checklist with you at the end of this article, but remember your checklist may be different than mine. Start by "looking up" and listing items you want to clean from top to bottom.
My next rule is that I start at the back of a room and work my way out the door. That way I don't have to track up anything I've cleaned on my way out.
Don't Try To Do Everything At Once
Seasonal cleaning can be daunting if you try and do everything at once. Just one spring cleaning task, such as transferring winter and spring clothing can be a full-day's job. Or cleaning all of the windows and doors is another all-day Tootsie Roll Pop! Choose your battles. My MUST clean list for the spring includes everything up top...window ledges, ceiling fans, the tops of window and door frames, curtain and blind headrails and valances and the tops of appliances and cabinets. A deep clean and disinfect of the refrigerator is also on my must do list. I've said it before, but a dirty refrigerator is one of my pet peeves. Take the time to clean out your fridge of condiments and leftovers you no longer need to make room for spring's fresh bounty. Disinfect and rinse the inside of the fridge from top to bottom including ice and water dispensers and drain pans. Clean the outside from top to bottom and vacuum underneath. The time saving advantage here is that you can more easily see what you have to work with, and disinfecting can prevent downtime from food illnesses.
My spring cleaning list also includes my car. When the weather warms and it's sunny, it's a great time to roll the car out of the garage where you can see what needs to be cleaned from top to bottom. Glass. Dash. Upholstery. Floormats. Carpet. This is a great time to spray disinfectant under floormats and on other cloth surfaces where mold can be hiding.
